Ryûichi Abé is the Kao Associate Professor of Religion at Columbia University. His publications, which are in both English and Japanese, include The Weaving of the Mantra: Kukai and the Construction of Esoteric Buddhist Discourse (Columbia, 1999) and Great Fool, Zen Master Ryokan (Hawaii, 1996). His interests include Buddhism and East Asian political history.
